Three Players With Multi-Goal Days as RU improves to 4-1
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse took command of the game from the outset and cruised to a 13-5 victory over LIU on Tuesday afternoon at a snow-cleared SHI Stadium. After RU cleared out the field following the blizzard that struck the tri-state area, the Scarlet Knights came out hot, racing out to a 6-0 lead and putting the game away with a 13-5 win over the previously unbeaten Sharks.
Rutgers improved to 4-1 with the victory while dealing LIU their first loss (3-1). Rutgers outshot the visitors 47-34, had a 36-17 advantage in ground balls and won 13-of-20 faceoffs.
"I really appreciate everyone in facilities for all their hard work in clearing the field," head coach Brian Brecht said. " It was amazing after two feet of snow to come out and see the field picture perfect. Matt Colagiovanni, Dan Ryan, Nicole Revilla, Jose Rodriguez... so many people worked hard and I really appreciate that."
Rutgers was led by Greyson Vorgang with three goals and two assists for five points. The five goals and the two assists were both new career-highs.
Kasey Mongillo, Joe Juengerkes and Colin Kelly all had two goals. Juengerkes tied his career-high with the two scores. Colin Zeller, Colin Kurdyla, Shane Murphy and Bennett Raphalian each had one goal apiece, with Raphalian scoring his first goal of the year. Murphy and Kurdyla each had a team-high three assists, each of them tying a previous career high.
Cardin Stoller made eight saves for RU. Caden Kirst came on in the fourth quarter, making his first career save. The Scarlet Knights went deep into their roster in the second half, with 38 players overall seeing game action. John Scarelli (6-of-10), Brock Desmaris (5-of-7) and Jake Rainero (2-of-3) saw time on faceoffs. Dylan Groff had a team-high six ground balls with two caused turnovers.
The Scarlet Knights came out firing in the first half, as the Scarlet Knights outscored the visitors 6-0 in the opening quarter. RU extended the lead to 7-0, holding LIU without a goal for the first 25 minutes of the contest. LIU cut the score to 8-3 and 10-4, but never got closer than six after that initial outburst, and RU cruised to the 13-5 final margin.
Having completed their lone midweek game of the season, the Scarlet Knights are back in action on Saturday for their third game in eight days. RU hosts Hofstra this Saturday at 3 p.m.
