Knights Even World Series

BOX SCORE PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Aided by throwing two runners out at home, the Knights evened the Rutgers World Series by winning 2-0 Saturday at Bainton Field. Each side has now won two games in the best-of-seven series.
"The defense and pitching controlled game four," head coach Joe Litterio said. "Both teams pitched well, but a few plays by the Knights decided this one. I look forward to seeing how the rest of this series shapes up."
Freshman Ryan Wares (Howell, N.J.) earned MVP of the game with three shutout innings on the mound to earn the win for the Knights. The right-hander allowed just one walk and one hit in the outing. Sophomore Max Herrmann (Rutherford, N.J.) and junior Reed Shuttle (Lansdale, Pa.) provided effective relief to nail down the win, with each striking out three in two innings to preserve the shutout. Shuttle was credited with the save.
Defensively, the Knights cut down two at home to keep the Scarlet off the board. In the fourth, senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) tripled with one out and tried to score on a grounder to sophomore shortstop Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.). The throw was low, but junior catcher R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) scooped the ball off the turf and applied the tag in time. A similar situation happened two innings later when senior Joe D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) tripled and attempted to score on a bouncer to second baseman Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.), who threw accurately home to record the out.
The Knights scored early on in the first when sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Campbell. Then in the sixth, Rosa delivered a two-out hit to score Carter again, who had previously reached on error.
Junior Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.) provided three innings of scoreless relief to keep the Scarlet in the game. Both teams were only able to manage three hits on the day.
Game five between the Knights (led by Tim Reilly) and the Scarlet (led by Casey Gaynor) will be Monday at 10 a.m. and is open to the public.
