ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has named 80 Rutgers University student-athletes across 19 programs as Distinguished Scholars for earning a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher during the 2017-18 academic year.
The 80 selections for the Scarlet Knights is a program record since joining the Big Ten for the 2014-15 season. Rutgers also posts school records with 21 student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0 GPA and 34 garnering repeat selections on the prestigious academic list.
Since joining the Big Ten, Rutgers has had 278 Scarlet Knights named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. RU's 80 honorees this year are among 1,009 students competing in intercollegiate competition to earn the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honor for the 2017-18 academic period.
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only students with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.
