PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Senior Jon Young (Old Bridge, N.J.) pitched three shutout innings with four strikeouts to propel the Knights to a 5-2 victory in must-win game against the Scarlet Tuesday at Bainton Field. The series is now tied at three to setup a winner-take-all game seven of the Rutgers World Series Wednesday.
"Today was a hard-fought game, but the Knights did what they had to do to force a deciding game seven," head coach Joe Litterio said. "It has been great competition between the teams and I look forward to seeing what happens Wednesday."
Young, named the game's MVP, opened with three strong frames to set the tone for the game, letting up only one hit and walking none. Sophomore Ryan Fleming (Churchville, Pa.) followed with two innings of relief, while sophomore Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) closed out the victory for the Knights with two scoreless frames. It was his second save of the series.
With the boost of dominant pitching, the Knights were first on the board with two runs in the third. Sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) placed down a perfect base-hit bunt to load the bases, with Campbell following with a sacrifice fly. With redshirt freshman Kevin Delaney (Randolph, N.J.) then on third and Carter on first, Carter forced the throw to second to successfully allow Delaney to come across the plate.
The Scarlet fought right back with two runs in the top of the third to tie the game. Junior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) led off with a double and eventually moved to third after two walks. Freshman Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) then lifted a run-scoring fly ball and sophomore Sean Feeney (Cranford, N.J.) connected for an RBI single to even the game at two.
The Knights would take the lead for good in the fourth. Junior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) singled with one down and eventually came home on an RBI groundout by freshman Doug deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.). Two more runs were added in the sixth to provide insurance.
The Scarlet battled in the final inning to load the bases down three, but were unable to get the big hit off Campbell.
Junior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) and freshman Leo Voreacos (Teaneck, N.J.) both had a pair of hits for the Knights, while Jennings had a single and double for the Scarlet.
The championship game of the series is set for Wednesday at 10 a.m. from Bainton Field. It will be a matchup of the Friday and Saturday starters from last year, as junior Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.) will go for the Scarlet and sophomore Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) for the Knights. The home team has won each game in the series through six contests, as the Knights will take the field first Wednesday. The game is open to the public.
