Weekly Athletic Communications Report: May 13

The Five Things to Know

1. Wrestling's Anthony Ashnault and rowing's Sarah Johanek were presented with the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor at the fifth annual RAwards on Tuesday night.

2. At the 2019 Big Ten Track and Field Championships, Rutgers claimed two Big Ten individual titles. Chris Mirabelli won the javelin title for a third time while Reanda Richards earned the women's program second ever Big Ten title with a first place finish in the 400 meter hurdles.

3. Men's soccer's Brian Shushkovsky and rowing's Sarah Johanek were recipients of the Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship.

4. Rutgers Athletics had a strong showing with the release of the NCAA APR data, as Rutgers programs averaged a 990, well above the NCAA average of 983.

5. Rutgers Athletics honored former baseball coach Fred Hill in a memorial celebration on Saturday.

Men's Track and Field

• Collected two medals and posted nine podium finishes at the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, led by Chris Mirabelli taking the javelin title for the third time (also having won in 2016 and 2017) and A'Nan Bridgett earning a silver medal in the long jump.

• Mirabelli was named All-Big Ten First Team, while Bridgett earned All-Big Ten Second Team accolades.

• Also claimed podium finishes in the triple jump (Malachi Davis, fifth), 400 meters (Taj Burgess, sixth), 4x100m relay (sixth), 4x400m relay (eighth), javelin (Greg Harnett, fifth and Michael Thomas, seventh) and discus (Jason Campbell, seventh).

• Sets sights on the NCAA East Regional Preliminaries May 23-25 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Women's Track and Field

• Won two medals at the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, as Reanda Richards became the second Scarlet Knight in women's track & field history to win a Big Ten title with a victory in the 400m hurdles and Courteney Campell captured silver in the high jump at a height of 1.73m (5' 8").

• Richards is currently ninth in the country in the event.

• Lou Mialhe reset the Rutgers 3000m steeplechase record for the third time in her career.

• Also scoring was sophomore Kathryn Campbell with a sixth place finish in the javelin.

• Qualifiers will compete at the NCAA East Regional in Austin, Texas on May 23-25

Baseball (20-28, 9-11)

• Holds the eighth and final Big Ten playoff berth heading into the final weekend. Starts series at No. 25 Indiana Thursday. The Friday and Saturday games will broadcast on Big Ten Network.

• Went 1-2 over the weekend at home versus Northwestern. Won the series finale, 5-4, using homers by Carmen Sclafani (three-run) and Tyler McNamara (solo) in their final game at Bainton Field. Tommy Genuario allowed only one earned run in seven innings.

• Program honored its four seniors (Luke Bowerbank, Serafino Brito, Tyler McNamara, Carmen Sclafani) and five departing managers in a ceremony following the series.

• Rutgers baseball teamed up once again with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation's Vs. Cancer program to raise over $4,000 towards the cause. Over $47,000 has been raised since 2013.

• Victor Valderrama appeared on SportsCenter "Top 10 Plays" after robbing a homer against Villanova.

• Rutgers leads the Big Ten with a 3.09 league ERA.

• Know Your Knights: Serafino Brito and Tyler McNamara

Softball (28-24, 11-12)

• Earned the automatic qualifier into the National Invitational Softball Championship, marking the program's first postseason bid since 1994.

• Opens the NISC on Thursday against Appalachian State (10 a.m.), with the winner advancing in the double-elimination bracket to face host Liberty at 4 p.m.

• Seeded sixth, dropped its Big Ten Tournament first round game to No. 11 Purdue, 4-3, on Thursday in a game that ended after 1 a.m.

• Freshmen Katie Wingert and Corah Price have been named to Big Ten All-Conference Teams, with Wingert earning an All-Big Ten Second Team nod and joining Price on the All-Freshman Team.

No. 13 Rowing

• Varsity eight earned its second Big Ten Boat of the Week honors on May 7 after defeating No. 13 Harvard at the Eastern Sprints

• Travels to Barboo, Wis., the site of the 2019 Big Ten Championships on Sunday May 19.

• Improved to No. 13 in the USRowing/CRCA Poll following the upset win

Men's Lacrosse

• Goalkeeper Max Edelmann was named Honorable Mention All-American in the release of the Inside Lacrosse media All-American team. Edelmann, who led the nation with 14.69 saves per game, becomes the 214th All-American in program history.

• With 12,711 fans attending home games this season, Rutgers ranked in the top-10 in the nation in total attendance for the second consecutive season.

Wrestling

• Nick Suriano and 2019 signee JoJo Aragona both captured wins last Monday during the 2019 "Grapple at the Garden" Beat the Streets (BTS) benefit inside the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.

• Suriano defeated 2018 World Championships bronze medalist Joe Colon in the closing seconds of his match, while Aragona pinned his foe in the second period. 2019 NCAA Champion Anthony Ashnault also competed at the charity event.

Women's Soccer

• Former Scarlet Knights Madison Pogarch and Kenie Wright have signed NWSL contracts with the Portland Thorns FC roster and Sky Blue FC, respectively.

Football

• Announced the 150 Pass for the 2019 season, a mobile-only ticket option guaranteeing admission to all home games.

• Alumns Jason and Devon McCourty will give the commencement speech at Rutgers University graduation, to be held this Sunday at HighPoint.com Stadium.

Volleyball

• Unveiled 2019 schedule.
